one handed controller for universal gaming
Videogames are not fully inclusive to gamers of all abilities and circumstances because most games are meant to be played using two hands, but what if there is a way to change gaming to make it more inclusive? Our group’s approach to this challenge was to prototype and design an augmentation for single handed use, focusing on comfort and stability with the objective to design a one handed controller for the current Xbox One.
As a group, we believed that Cobra allows for gamers of all capabilities to enjoy video games equally. This belief was the motivation behind our design goal.
augmentation (ideation+exploration+refinement), final augmentation, one handed controller sketch ideation, controller configuration
Rapid cardboard ideation consisted of 15 prototypes (5 per group member). We then made 9 (3 per group member) sculpy and styrene explorations (only showing my own). Next, we chose one prototype to move forward with to make a 3D print refinement to test playing Ori and The Blind Forest to finalize our augmentation design.
We moved forward with the joystick augmentation and adjusted the design so its rotational mobility could fully work by using the leg or a surface to move the left joystick while the controller is handled with the right hand, where the majority of the buttons are located.
One Handed Controller Sketch Ideation
The sketches shown below are my own. Moving forward we chose our team member Yi's form idea to design the one handed controller which then became "Cobra" due to its shape.
Custom Configuration/User Interface
As we came up with the solution to design a one handed controller to be universal for all gamers, we knew that there would have to be a way to customize controls and save by configurations whether it is through a preferred configuration or by game. Thus, I decided to take the user interface portion and design how the controller is customized.
